Forastero is a species of cacao bean, representing about 80% of global production, known for its resilience and strong flavor. It is widely grown in West Africa, particularly in Guinea, as well as other tropical regions. Forastero beans are typically larger, have a thicker shell, and are more bitter than other varieties such as Criollo. They are a key ingredient in many chocolate products.

    Production:
    Forastero cacao is the most widely cultivated variety, making it an important component of the global chocolate supply, according to Chocmod.

    Flavor:
    While known for its bitterness, the specific flavor profile of Forastero can vary depending on the region and processing methods.

    Characteristics:
    Forastero beans are generally larger, have a thicker shell, and are darker in color than Criollo beans, according to Chocmod.

    Cultivation:
    According to Chocmod, Forastero cacao trees are suited to different climates and are grown in West Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia.
